The Russian invasion triggered an unprecedented exodus and humanitarian ordeal, with millions of people fleeing their homes. To cope with the displacement crisis in Polish border towns, huge warehouses in shopping centres under construction were quickly turned into dormitories, and the car parks in front of them into canteens and free first aid posts. These makeshift shelters have become, for a night or two, a new home for all the refugees, women, small children, whole families, whose homes have been destroyed by war. Ordinary things such as mats, blankets, clothes, toys, together with the food brought by the local population, become crucial and are transformed from simple objects into symbols of a unique and pure human solidarity.
